The Totally Trippy TV Show that is Dark
A couple months ago I decided to check out the Netflix show 1899. It wasn’t my favorite show, and I didn’t love the ending, but I could not stop watching it. At the end of every episode, I had to watch the next to find out what weird thing would happen. When it was over, I discovered that the same creators of 1899 (Baran bo Odar and Jantje Friese) had made another show, and that show is Dark. So, I started watching Dark to see if it had some of the same qualities in the storytelling that keep you wanting to learn more.
At first, it seems like a show about a small town in Germany where kids are disappearing. Basically, your average missing kid whodunit. But then it twists and it turns and suddenly you’re watching a show about time travel and maybe a secret society and a creepy priest guy and more time travel, and by the third (and final season), the timelines are overlapping with parallel worlds (sorry if that was a spoiler, but honestly, there are so many twists and turns in this show, it really doesn’t matter).
After some episodes, my head was spinning (hence, the trippy) but not in a bad way. The writing is so tight that there are no loop holes in the time travel or the characters in multiple timelines, and somehow I was able to follow it. As someone currently writing her own time travel novel, it’s not an easy thing to do. You have to be aware of every change you make in one timeline in case it can affect another one.
And just like 1899, I always wanted to know what could possibly happen next. How else could they possibly twist this story?
I’m not going to tell you because I think you should go on the trip for yourself.
So, if you’re out of TV shows to watch and want to watch something that will mess with your head a little, but in a good way, check out Dark, and . . .
Stay Curious.
A couple disclaimers: I am not a critic. I recommend what I like and talk about it. Also, I do not currently participate in any affiliate programs or get paid to recommend something on Featured Fridays. These are simply things that I enjoy and hope others will enjoy as well. Thanks for reading!
