Never Have I Ever
Not long ago, I asked for recommendations for TV shows that were lighthearted and easy to binge: something to entertain and distract me. More than one person recommended the Netflix show Never Have I Ever. I was a little hesitant as it is a high school rom-com, and the last thing I need to be reminded of is my high school years. Yes, I would take 50 over 15 any day of the week.
But I was charmed by the main character, Devi, and her friends, Eleanor and Fabiola. I, too, was a nerdy teenage girl, and while it is satisfying to watch a nerdy girl main character actually date her high school crush (and then some!), I have to say I can’t relate.
But I did relate to this show on a whole other level. While on the surface it presents as a rom-com, on a deeper level it is a story about fathers and daughters. You see, just like Devi, I was one of the lucky ones: I had a kindhearted, generous father who thought I was the smartest girl in the world. And when you lose that father, whether you’re 15 or 50, it hurts, because you’re not just losing your father but also the unconditional love that you know you’ll never get again. And all you want is for him to come back—so you can make him proud, so you can show him you really are the girl he saw you as, no matter how many mistakes you make in life.
I, like Devi, have had some beautiful things happen since my dad passed away that show me he is always around, loving me unconditionally from somewhere in the great beyond. Unlike Devi, I did not get into my first choice college, but I digress. Oops, spoiler!
So, if you want to watch a show about some nerdy teenage girls who make good or a show about the love between fathers and daughters, try Never Have I Ever. And, like Devi, always . . .
Stay Curious.
A couple disclaimers: I am not a critic. I recommend what I like and talk about it. Also, I do not currently participate in any affiliate programs or get paid to recommend something on Featured Fridays. These are simply things that I enjoy and hope others will enjoy as well. Thanks for reading!
